Sole Source Justification
Also known as: Single Source Justification
A written internal argument that only one supplier can meet a requirement, used to buy without running a competitive process.
A sole source justification is how a hospital buys something without competing it. The requester documents why no alternative supplier can satisfy the requirement: a unique capability, an existing installed base that cannot be duplicated, a compatibility constraint, or an exclusive contractual relationship.
Supply chain and compliance review these carefully, because an undisciplined sole source process is how organizations end up with expensive, fragmented, unauditable purchasing.
The strongest sole source arguments are structural rather than promotional. "Only this vendor integrates natively with the EHR module we already run" survives review. "Only this vendor has the best accuracy" does not, because accuracy claims are contestable and the reviewer knows it.
This is one of several reasons a documented, specific integration story is worth more in healthcare sales than a general performance claim.
