Ambient Clinical Documentation
Tools that listen to a clinical encounter and draft the note, aimed at reducing documentation time rather than at diagnosis.
Ambient clinical documentation tools capture the conversation during a patient encounter and generate a draft clinical note from it. The clinician reviews, edits, and signs. The product is aimed at documentation burden, not at diagnosis, which places it in a different evaluation category than clinical decision support.
This is currently the most actively evaluated clinical AI category in United States health systems. The buying chain typically runs through the CMIO and clinical documentation leadership, with heavy involvement from information security because encounter content is protected health information by definition.
The evaluation questions that separate vendors in practice are rarely about transcription quality. They are about EHR write-back, specialty coverage, what happens to encounter audio, model update notification, and per-clinician pricing at scale. See questions to ask an ambient AI vendor.
