Chief Nursing Informatics Officer

Also known as: CNIO

A nurse executive who leads nursing informatics, owning how clinical systems affect nursing workflow, documentation, and staffing.

The CNIO is the nursing counterpart to the CMIO, and in many systems the more consequential of the two for anything that touches bedside workflow, because nursing is the largest clinical workforce and absorbs the most documentation burden.

Any product that changes what a nurse does, how long a task takes, or what gets charted will be evaluated by nursing informatics whether or not the vendor planned for it.

Vendors selling physician-facing tools routinely fail to involve nursing and then discover during implementation that the workflow assumed a nursing action nobody agreed to. Nursing informatics is cheaper to consult early than to lose late.
