Chief Medical Information Officer

Also known as: CMIO

A practicing or formerly practicing physician who leads clinical informatics, translating between clinical needs and information technology decisions.

The CMIO sits between medicine and IT. The role owns clinical system configuration, clinical decision support governance, documentation workflow, and increasingly the clinical side of AI adoption.

For clinical software, the CMIO is frequently the decisive technical evaluator, because the role is one of very few that can credibly assess both whether the clinical claim is real and whether the integration story is real.

A CMIO is usually not the budget holder. The role influences heavily and decides rarely. Selling as if the CMIO can sign is a common and expensive misread.
